matchup here. this is nationally. president obama leading 49% to 46% among likely voters. again, within the margin of error and closer than it was two weeks ago. on the direction of the country, 40% say we're heading in the right direction. 53% say things are on the wrong track. 40% is the highest mark for this question in 3 1/2 years. there's also growing optimism about the economy. 57% say it's improving. that's the highest number this poll has recorded on this question. one thing not going the president's way here, his handling of the situations in egypt and libya. more people disapprove than approve on that question. as for mr. romney, it appears he's still paying for the comments about the 47%, 51% of respondents to this nbc poll say recent impressions made by the republican candidate make him less favorable. they view him less favorably. 28% say more favorably. >>> both presidential candidates were off the trail as they prepared for tonight's debate. the president spent the past couple of days working with his team in nevada. took a quick break to visit the hoover dam. why

president obama will win the three presidential debates in the next three and a half, four weeks and that governor romney will lose them or at least a third of them asked believe that. romney has the opportunity to overachieve. it's sort of what campaigns want. it seems counter intuitive though you would want voters to have low expectations for you it gives mr. romney an opportunity to not only lay out his case but to pick apart president obama's. the theme will be as we have heard over and over and over again in recent weeks the country can't afford four more years like the last four years. romney wants to do it in a way that shows he is capable, able, has solutions, dodges. so barbs by the president regarding his alleged specificity. people find it difficult to access mr. romney. this will give an opportunity to show people who he really is shep? >> shepard: carl, a new ad out tonight. i wonder if that gives us a hint of what we might hear in this debate. >> it does. mr. romney has been complaining in the recent weeks that the president often misrepresents his position on abortion, the

that mitt romney announced about the last five weeks. if you elect obama for the next four years, there will be no better than the past four years. i happen to believe that is true, but not very inspiring. it is hard to blame the guy. he wants to get reelected with a pretty narrow cast approach to democratic and independent constituencies. i do not think we will get the kind of framing you would like. i am a little less pessimistic. i do think reality matters. and we will hit a cliff and all kinds of ways. the fed cannot keep printing money and expecting the world to take it or buy treasury notes to fund trillion dollar deficits forever. the economy is slow and going into another dip. i actually think the next president will have a moment between november 7, and i do not know, this summer or fall of 2013 to do a lot. i would bet there is a huge legislative agenda in 2013. i did not really by the gridlock argument. if obama gets reelected, evil have a mandate basically -- he will have a mandate basically the lesser version of bowel- simpson. if romney wins, he will have a mandate

saying within hours of that attack president obama's men station received about a dozen intelligence reports suggesting that militants connected to al qaeda were involved in that attack. now despite those reports, top u.s. intelligence officials spent nearly two weeks claiming the attack was spontaneous while playing down the involvement of militant groups. ambassador john bolton is former u.s. ambassador to the u.n. and fox news contributor. big picture here. what do you think the cost is to the united states on the world stage that we're continuing to discuss this infighting who knew what when and not going out and getting the people that committed this act? >> well, i think it shows that there's desorganization within the state department, within the administration, about exactly what happened and i think that is a signal of vulnerability potentially at other embassies in the middle east or around the world. i think the consequence we need most here we need to find the people who actually perpetrated the attack and either eliminate them or get them in custody and start questioning
